Low, mid or taper? The key difference is transition height
A skin fade goes almost to zero at the skin. A low fade starts lower and looks more restrained, while a mid fade raises the transition toward temple level for stronger contrast.
A taper fade keeps a very short but visible length at the hairline, producing a softer result. Each option can be combined with styles such as crop, quiff or buzz cut.

What is the difference between low fade and mid fade?
A low fade starts just above the ear and at the nape, so it is more subtle. A mid fade starts higher, around temple level, giving more contrast.
Does taper fade go to zero?
Not in the same way as a skin fade. It leaves a very short visible length, around 0.5–1 mm, at the hairline.
